DIEAG launches a closed architectural competition for the three prominent high‑rises on the BE-U | Behrens-Ufer

  • Non-public architectural competition
for three buildings to be awarded in parallel
  • Invitation-only competition with an expectation of 15 participating architecture firms
  • Concepts should tap into the potential of the site
    and enrich the architecture

DIE Deutsche Immobilien Entwicklungs AG (DIEAG) is launching a single-phase, closed architectural competition in accordance with the guidelines for planning competitions for the three prominent high-points of its BE‑U │ Behrens‑Ufer district development. A total of 15 architectural firms were invited to submit designs for the three sites by 3 June 2024, with the aim of meeting the ambitious targets for energy efficiency and sustainable construction, as well as integrating the existing urban development concept and specifications. The architectural competition is being held simultaneously for all three high-rise buildings of the BE-U │ Behrens-Ufer business quarter development in order to focus on the area’s district concept. Drees & Sommer SE has been commissioned to plan and organise the competition.

Robert Sprajcar, board member of DIEAG and jury member, states: “Due to the complexity of the competition, the jury meeting has been split into two days and is scheduled for 11 and 12 July. The jury’s task is to identify the best possible compatibility between the overarching, citywide guidelines and recommendations of the high-rise model for Berlin with detailed concepts of the Treptow-Köpenick district, and the vision of the overall quarter in the submitted designs.”

Ulrike Zeidler, Head of the Treptow-Köpenick Urban Development Department and member of the jury, points out: “The area around the Peter Behrens Building, as a monument to Berlin’s modern industrial culture, with its significant history as a business location, creates a unique basis for an innovative and sustainable commercial district here in Treptow-Köpenick. I am delighted to be part of the jury and to make my contribution to this future location in Berlin.”

The positions of the jury (prize jury) have been allocated as follows: The substantive jury consists of: Robert Sprajcar (DIEAG), Prof. Stefanie Molthagen-Schnöring (HTW, engl.: University of Applied Sciences), Senate Building Director Prof. Petra Kahlfeldt (Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing), Ulrike Zeidler (Treptow-Köpenick District Office) and Till Ackers (Züblin). The members of the expert jury are Dieter Eckert (ENS Architekten BDA), Prof. Silvia Malcovati (FH Potsdam, engl.: University of Applied Scienes), Prof. Dogan G. Yurdakul (GfP – Gesellschaft für Planung), Reinhard Busch (Fugmann Janotta und Partner) and Prof. Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir (Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Architekten).

The concepts should fully exploit the potential of the site and enrich the architecture, with the aim of creating a heterogeneous urban concept. The building in the immediate vicinity of the river Spree with the working title A 1.3, has a gross floor area of around 15,000 sqm. Building A 3.1, including the base, has a gross floor area of around 33,000 sqm, and the third building at the eastern end of the site, numbered A 3.3, has a gross floor area of around 28,000 sqm. BE-U | Behrens-Ufer will create a total of 235,000 sqm rental space in historic and new buildings by 2029, primarily for businesses from the life sciences, laboratory and light industrial sectors.
