Berlin, 20 October 2022 – The DIEAG Group, together with the District Office Treptow-Köpenick, supports the Förderverein Wassersporthandicaps e.V..

On Monday, 10 October 2022, a new training and rescue trimaran was officially commissioned and christened by the Förderverein Wassersporthandicaps e.V. (Association for the Promotion of Handicapped Persons in Water Sports) on the premises of the Sportclub Berlin-Grünau e.V., which is part of the Olympic Canoe Training Centre in Grünau. The boat was purchased thanks to a public grant from the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin from the Sammelstiftung Kreuzberg (Kreuzberg Collective Foundation) and a generous donation from DIE Deutsche Immobilien Entwicklungs AG (DIEAG), a property developer active in the region. The boat is one of only three of its kind in Germany and the only one of its kind in Berlin, and is particularly suited to escorting and rescuing physically impaired water sports enthusiasts, thanks to its stability and platform close to the water’s surface.

Carolin Weingart, Deputy Mayor and District Councillor for Social Affairs, Employment and Participation in Treptow-Köpenick, christened the new vehicle “Noeck.” According to old folklore, the Noeck is a water spirit that guards the fords of rivers and lives in lakes, ponds, pools, springs, fountains or drops of water – it is said to be moody and changeable, just like the element of water itself.

The “Noeck” will be used for training and competitions by the Förderverein Wassersporthandicaps e.V. and will also be lent out to other dedicated clubs.

Rolf Kelm, 1st Chairman of the Förderverein Wassersporthandicaps e.V.: “With the previous boat, it was not possible to rescue a disabled athlete from the water. Without the generous support of DIEAG and the Treptow-Köpenick district, the purchase of the trimaran would not have been feasible. It demonstrates that the inclusion and participation of disabled athletes is not just lip service for these partners.”

Carolin Weingart, Deputy District Mayor and District Councillor for Social Affairs, Employment and Participation in Treptow-Köpenick: “I am delighted that Wassersporthandicaps e.V. is getting the equipment it needs to ensure the safety of disabled athletes on the water. This will make the club more attractive to interested sports enthusiasts from Berlin and beyond, and act a flagship for Treptow-Köpenick.”

Thomas Mohr, Board Member of DIEAG: “The commitment of Förderverein Wassersporthandicaps e.V. is exemplary and we very much hope that it will set a precedent in popular sports here in Berlin and elsewhere. We look forward to supporting the association in the future and wish its many members continued enjoyment of their sport.”
