DIEAG starts demolition work in the south-west block of BE-U | Behrens-Ufer

Berlin, 22 February 2023 – Berlin-based DIE Deutsche Immobilien Entwicklungs AG (DIEAG) is starting demolition work on the site of a former television electronics factory in the south-eastern Berlin district of Oberschöneweide. The clearance, which is being carried out in consultation with the Treptow-Köpenick district authority, is located on the approximately two-hectare south-west square of the future BE-U | Behrens-Ufer development. It is also part of the preparatory construction work for the revitalisation of the listed Peter Behrens Building, which is due to begin shortly, with building sections A, B, C, V and Hall 5 on the site’s North Karree, as well as Buildings D, F and Hall 1, which are also located there.

In addition to the construction site facilities for the revitalisation of the North Karree, which will start shortly, a public visitor centre with access to the riverbank and a temporary car park for the first tenants of the North Karree will be built on the vacated site. A total of five old buildings, including warehouses, workshops and a canteen, are expected to be demolished by the end of May 2023.

DIEAG board member Robert Sprajcar says: “We will preserve the industrial and above all historic charm of the buildings, develop the whole quarter according to the latest sustainability standards and offer tenants very flexible usage options. There is a lot of interest and we have already been able to reserve Hall 5 and other parts of the Peter Behrens Building.”

The solid substance of the existing buildings, some of which have very high ceiling load-bearing capacities and floor heights of more than 3.60 metres, allows for a wide range of uses, from offices and restaurants to light manufacturing, laboratories, and research.

A total of 235,000 sqm of rental space for companies will be created in historic and new buildings on the approximately ten-hectare former industrial site BE-U | Behrens-Ufer. Completion is scheduled for 2027. The first leases in the existing and new buildings will take place from the end of 2023 and 2024 respectively. The aim is for the buildings to be certified to at least the DGNB “Gold” standard.
